Right from the get-go (completion in 1885), CPR management realized that the western mountains were face cards in their dealings—something with high value if they played the game well. Vice President (and subsequently, President) Cornelius Van Horne knew it when he famously quipped “If we can’t export the scenery, we’ll import the tourists.” And so they did.

Art, beauty, and industry met in the mountains, where the CPR sponsored artists and landscape photographers to turn the scenery into an international spectacle (and profit).
